Frequently Asked Questions
How does Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP) testing work?
Early in pregnancy, the baby’s DNA can be detected in the mother’s bloodstream using highly sensitive equipment. We are able to separate the fetal DNA from the mother’s DNA to create a DNA profile for the baby. We then use the baby’s profile to test the baby’s DNA against the potential father’s DNA to determine with 99.9% confidence whether he is the father.
How are DNA samples collected?
Prenatal paternity test DNA samples typically include a blood draw from the mother (with no risk to the baby) and a cheek swab from the possible father.
Are there any restrictions for paternity testing while pregnant?
We are unable to perform a NIPP test in certain situations, including if the woman is less than 7 weeks pregnant, expecting twins or multiples, or if the fetus was conceived through IVF. Additionally, testing cannot be performed if the possible fathers share a close biological relationship (brothers, father/son, etc.)
Does the test determine the gender of the baby?
Yes. We can include it on your report if you would like, for no additional charge.
How long does it take to get prenatal paternity DNA test results?
Results are posted 5 business days (one full week) after samples are received at the lab.
How will I receive my results?
For security reasons, we do not send a copy of your results via email. Instead, a PDF report can be downloaded from your secure online account on our website. We immediately send a notification email to the address on file as soon as the online report is ready to view. You may also request a hard copy of the report for an additional fee.
What do test results look like, and how do I interpret them?
We follow all prenatal paternity test guidelines for the language used in the report. For this reason, your paternity test results will say whether the possible father IS EXCLUDED or IS NOT EXCLUDED as the biological father of the child tested.
IS EXCLUDED: If the Probability of Paternity is 0%, this means that he cannot be the father because testing determined that he and the child do not share a biological parent/child relationship.
IS NOT EXCLUDED: If the Probability of Paternity is 99.9%, this means that he is highly likely to be the biological father because testing determined that he and the child do share a biological parent/child relationship.
You have the option to include fetal sex on the report at no additional cost. If you choose to include this, the report will indicate whether the fetus is male or female.
IMPORTANT: Paternity testing is calculated using statistics. Therefore, a probability of paternity can never be 100%, because that perfect score would require testing every man on earth with the same racial background of the man tested—which isn’t possible. A probability of 99%+ is considered conclusive for paternity.
Can I use my HomePaternity test results to obtain child support?
Because a strict chain-of-custody process hasn’t been followed for this test, and identities were not verified at the time of the test, results are not accepted for any legal reason and are not recognized in courts. If you need a test that can be used for legal purposes, call our partners at DNA Diagnostics Center: (800) 284-0573.
